My name is Sarah Kim, and this is my fifth year teaching at John Adams Academy and my ninth year of teaching overall. Having been trained in classical education, John Adams Academy feels very much like home. My teaching journey has taken me across Texas, Colorado, Indiana, the Philippines, and the Czech Republic, allowing me to experience the beauty and culture of different places. I love traveling and going on adventures, which has enriched my perspective as an educator. Some of my favorite activities include fitness, cooking, reading, dining out, and, of course, dessert. Above all, I absolutely LOVE learning!
What I appreciate most about JAA is its emphasis on mentorship and character development. John Adams Academy views each child as a whole being with inherent value and purpose, rather than just a cog in a machine to be pushed into the workforce. Over the past several years, I’ve seen firsthand how the academy cultivates a genuine love of learning in scholars. Most importantly, JAA prioritizes teaching scholars how to think, not merely what to think. I believe this critical thinking skill is essential for developing servant leaders in today’s society.
What excites me most about the online program is the meaningful time I get to spend with scholars. With our limited live Zoom sessions each week, every moment is intentional and impactful. Our colloquium time fosters rich discussions where scholars explore ideas, ask thoughtful questions, and think deeply about their learning. Additionally, the 1:1 mentoring meetings and small group sessions allow for personalized support, strengthening relationships and helping scholars grow in their individual goals.
One of my favorite classics is The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Each time I reread it, I uncover new insights, truths, and analogies. The themes of perseverance through challenges, the importance of friendship, and the power of sacrifice are timeless and resonate deeply with readers of all ages.
